I enjoy yoga at Tree House Yoga Center as it works with all aspects of the practice, not just the asanas.

The setting is delightful as well, and adds to the wonderful body work done there, whether for general relaxation or for specific tension relief.

Yoga and Music

I just purchased an iPod for the classroom and am loading it with fantastic music for classes and sessions. No more boom boxes and sloppy stacks of cd’s….yippee!!! This will add a new dimension to our yoga offerings. In these modern times yoga and technology do work in tandem. Music falls into the Pratyahara Limb of yoga practices and means ‘sense withdrawal or mastery’ and complements a well rounded Hatha yoga practice. We all understand the need to turn off the outside world, to separate and bring our attention inward. Slow rhythmic breathing, focusing the mind and listening to healing music facilitate deep states of inner peace. It is increasingly important to include some regular and conscious downtime every day. As your focus moves inward and leaves the external world you tap into cellular nourishment and replenish the nervous system. It’s like soaking your vital systems in a luxurious bath. We live in sensory overload most of the time and have to become increasingly skillful at turning it off and tuning our energies inward. Appropriate music enhances the relaxation response. The trick is discrimination and discernment as to what images, sounds and energies our sensory filters or radars absorb. In yoga we learn how to fine tune the inputs as well as the filters and radar screens to achieve inner harmony and balance. Although ‘Silence is Golden’ selective music is wonderful for soothing the senses. Please send me the names of your favorite songs, artists and music sites that are well suited for yoga, massage and relaxation.

New Class - Blissful Yoga - October 2nd 6-7:30pm with Barbara Coleman

Diminish stress as you experience yoga at a slower pace with deep inner release. Class begins with a slow-paced all-levels asana practice followed by extreme relaxation and restoration in the form of body scanning, guided imagery, and in-depth movement of the spine using props, pillows, and blankets to assist your body in letting go of tension.  Experience the bliss of melting away stress on all levels...physical, mental and emotional. This is an excellent class for releasing anxiety, chronic pain and tension patterns and mental business.

Moving into Vata Time after a Very HOT Summer

This time of year is it crucial to release the excess heat accumulated before the cool, autumn winds of Vata push it into being a fever of flu or cold. The best way is pancha karma. After a pulse reading, a personalized plan is created --either a home self administered program or one that includes treatments by a trained PK technician. Panchakarma stirs up your body, so toxins & excess doshas may be eliminated. It is a time when rest and calm are necessary to keep from pushing the loosened toxins deeper into the body. Emotional releases may commonly be part of the cleansing process. The general routine includes daily oil massages and sweating, eating a mono-diet of easily digested kitcheree (split, hulled mung beans and basmati rice with spices), along with therapies individualized to balance your doshas.
For a less complicated regime, one can get an Ayurvedic pulse reading can confirm what herbs and diet might more gradually reduce the Pitta while continuing your daily life.

Massage and Ayurveda with Mira: (exerpt)

After the last newsletter where I sang the glories of the Ayurvedic facial, many of you came in for one and it was a real treat to do so many! As long as the weather stays summery I will continue to offer the summer facial, and I am working on formulating the fall facial. As the weather cools I will incorporate warm towels for the face, a homemade pumpkin facial mask, and a warm sesame oil scalp massage.
In the meantime, several new clients have requested deep tissue massage, which has me revisiting this modality. It is very gratifying when someone comes to me in pain and after a treatment or series of treatments feels significant relief.  I know that most of you have come in for a warm oil Ayurvedic massage and pleeez by all means continue to do so! However, feel free to request deep tissue work when and as needed. Yes Ayurvedic massage can work out knots in muscles too- but for chronic pain, limited range of motion, injury recovery, reducing scar tissue, then deep tissue work is very beneficial.
All of this has me pondering questions like: What exactly is Ayurvedic massage and how does it differ from Swedish or Deep Tissue massage? I will be answering that question for the rest of my life. Right now I can say that all massage modalities have common elements and benefits.  What makes Ayurvedic massage Ayurvedic is partly about technique, partly about the use of oils and herbs, and mostly about seeing and understanding the client in the Ayurvedic perspective-as ultimately a spiritual being, with a subtle physiology as well as a physical, and perhaps most importantly, as a unique individual. Each individual is treated in a way unique to them, in that moment in time. So while one person may come in and complain of a headache due to the heat (Pitta), another may come in with a headache associated with anxiety and aggravated Vata. The Ayurvedic perspective uses the twenty gunas (ten pairs of opposites) to restore balance.
Dr. Lad taught that there is nothing that exists that does not have a certain quality to it. There is no substance without quality. Vata, being composed of air and ether is light, dry, rough, subtle, mobile, and cold. Guess what our Colorado climate is? The same. So our climate will tend to aggravate Vata, making those qualities accumulate. Everything that exists affects everything around it. We exist in relation to everything that surrounds us, because we are made up of the very same five elements as all of creation. The way to balance aggravated Vata is to apply qualities that are opposite its own: things like warmth, moisture, heaviness, grounding foods, stability, oiliness, substance etc.
Stay happy, stay grounded, stay cool (if you are Pitta!) stay warm (if you are Vata!), stay busy (if you are Kapha), and I hope to see you soon at the Tree House.
